I like to keep my makeup classic and minimal now I’m older and I am now much more strategic about make up placement. If I go to the effort to put makeup on, I feel it’s best to apply it in the most flattering way. I add a highlight to my higher features. I avoid a heavily contoured look and instead soften my features with light contouring only where I feel I need it. Heavy contouring and caking can create a severe look that does not soften features on mature skin. Here is my 10 Step Every Day Makeup Tutorial for Women Over 40.
Good Skincare. You can find a blog post on my skincare routine here.
I am a huge advocate of a really sound, skincare routine. If you can, find a skincare consultant that can advise you on a mature skin regime. My doctor is in Essex UK and is a former burns doctor and is therefore very well versed in skin. Many good beauticians will help you too. Do your research. Ask your friends, reach out on Facebook if you are on social media and/or read reviews to find the best consultant or ask what others use and then find what’s best for you.
Drink a glass of water every hour of the day and keep to a diet full of fresh fruit, veggies and salad and strive to minimise stimulants such as coffee, alcohol and sugar.
I also have an article on this here.
Step 3- COLOUR CORRECTING PRIMER
Prime with a colour correcting primer. Life Changing! If you are not priming with a colour correcting primer, then you are missing a trick. This type of primer allows for a smooth complexion from the outset. There will be no need for heavy coverage if you can counteract discolouration on the face before you even start to apply makeup. I’m using Stila One Step Correct.
Step 4- FOUNDATION
I add foundation at this point. In this tutorial I used Ilia Beauty Serum Foundation. It’s cruelty free and was gifted to me. It feels beautiful on the skin and works well on mature skin. Blend down the neck and don’t forget your ears. You can see other recommended foundation on the product reviews page here.
Step 5- EYE MAKEUP AND BROWS
I do my eye makeup at this point and I start with Urban Decay’s eye primer. I then set with Anastasia Beverly Hills Translucent powder. Always set your eye primer with loose powder. You can see how I do a flattering eye makeup look here.
Step 6- CONCEALER
Now that my eye makeup is done, I then use my concealer by placing it on the inner corner of my eyes and the outer corner. I’m using the Ilia Beauty Serum Concealer in Chicory. By applying to the outer corner, it allows for a more lifted appearance and ensures the eyeshadow is sitting higher up on the outer eye. If it sits lower that the lash line it can drawer the eyes downwards. We want lift!! I then set with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Translucent powder. I then apply my mascara.
Step 7- BLUSH
I add colour to my face. For me, that is usually just a little blush. I am in love with the Jane Iredale Cotton Candy. It suits my pale cool toned skin and it has a slight sheen to it, which lifts a more mature complexion. They have many colours and I plan to review this on the site soon as my favourite cruelty free powder blush. If I feel like adding some more dimensions, I’ll then use my Too Faced Contour palette and add some contour. In this tutorial today- I didn’t feel I needed to but the option is there if you feel you need it.
Step 8- HIGHLIGHTER
I don’t feel my makeup is finished without adding highlight to the higher points of my face. I am using Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Sugar Palette. A great cruelty free brand that has recently taken centre stage in my makeup kit. Add to the higher points of the cheeks, bridge of the nose, middle of the brow and the cupids bow.
Step 9- SETTING POWDER
Do not be scared of powder ladies!!! If you have had problems with caking and it getting into your lines, you have been using the wrong type of powder. Go for translucent setting powders. I used to recommend Laura Mercier Setting powder but it’s unclear if the brand are cruelty free.
I therefore went on the hunt for an alternative and I found the Anastasia Beverly Hills Translucent powder and I would say that it’s even better! Set areas of the face that tend to get a little oily and avoid areas that are dry. For me that just means setting the middle of my face.
Step 10- LIP PLUMPER
For this look I used my Beauty Lab lip plumper. I love it for a look that’s natural but it really does give the lips a fuller more plumped up appearance.
I hope you enjoyed my 10 Step Every Day Makeup Tutorial for Women Over 40. Create this look on yourself and wear it day or build on it for an evening look. For evening you might want to add a lipstick on top of the lip plumper and adding some individual lashes is always a good idea if you have the patients.
