Your Mindset when Transitioning to Grey Hair….
While the following solutions are very practical. I found it important to remember that growing out your greys helps with a tweak to your mindset. Growing out your grey hair is something to be incredibly proud of. Not only is it going to be freeing and empowering for you, but you straight away become a beacon for other women to do the same. The more women deciding to make the decision, the more women role models we will have and the more freedom we give to others. I have inspired women both online and in my personal life, not because I am in any way special, but just because I did it!! You will be the same! Every woman who does this is an inspiration and you are absolutely no exception. Well well done!! Make sure you tell yourself every day how proud you are of yourself.
Experiment with Hairstyles and Accessories….
Experimenting with Hairstyles while Transitioning to grey hair, can be the perfect time to experiment with new hairstyles and accessories. I know I did. I learned to braid my own hair, experimented more with head scarves and so on.
I am going to share with you 4 of my favourite hairstyles to wear when transitioning to grey.
Twist are easy and one of Best Hairstyles for Transitioning to Grey Hair.
Twists were my very first ‘go to’ when I transitioned to my grey hair. They add interest to your hair as the hairline colour grows in. Twist it all around the hairline or just in some sections. Anything goes with this style. You can leave your hair out or pull it back into a bun or pony tail.
Depending on when you are reading this, a tutorial of this will be up on my Instagram @silver_styling week beginning Monday 13th July. Make sure you follow along and join in over on Instagram
Plaits and Braids
Plaits and braids are ‘up there’ with one of the Best Hairstyles for Transitioning to Grey Hair when you are transitioning to your natural grey hair.
Determination to learn to braid definitely kicked in for me when I started to transition to grey hair. I see other women getting motivated to learn to braid too. It’s fabulous to learn to braid even if you traditionally have shorter hair.
I love a small dutch or French braid at the hairline and water falling down. Just gorgeous and once you get the basics down pat, then it opens up a whole new world of hairstyling and interest to your silver hair. I just love that! Grey hair is definitely never boring when you learn to braid and plait. Be sure to go to Instagram @silver_styling for loads of video on braiding. Learn to ‘Play Up’ your Natural texture when Transitioning to Grey Hair.
This came first for me because I had damaged my hair so badly in taking drastic steps to cover my grey hair. To help repair my damaged hair without having to cut it all off- I learned how to make the most of my natural hair texture. I read and researched the curly girl method and eventually found a way to style my hair without damaging it. From here, the natural progression was to transition to grey hair. What was the point in doing all this good to my only to douse in in chemicals every month.
I now do the curly girl method as my base, but have found my own way of styling it with minimal heat or no heat at all. I found my hair to be slightly wavy, which is quite a common texture type. Do you know what your hair texture is? If you don’t do some research on the curly girl method. I found that wearing my hair with its natural wave helped to cover up the early months of grey better than if I wore it straight plus it was the start of me looking at more natural and gently ways to care for my hair and myself.
Headbands are fabulous and there are so many wonderful ways to wear one. Don’t believe for one minute that headbands are for younger people- its just not true. My 70 year old mother in law has been wearing a headband during lock down and she looks great. It takes the attention away from grey roots to the headband and is a great distraction.
I hope this has inspired you to have fun while you transition to grey hair by trying hairstyles that perhaps are new to you. You can find my 6 ways to Wear a Headband on Natural Grey Hair. The fun fast version is on IGTV and the real time with explanations version over on YouTube. Pop on over to both to have a look and grab some headband inspo.
